Barmilling Services
Barmilling is machining a whole bar of material into a new shape, also known as continuous profile and edge milling or horizontal long bar machining. Able Barmilling’s barmilling services are an excellent alternative to extruding or cold drawing for low volume requirements or prototype manufacturing. Although there are many industry applications, the most common is bar resizing or shapes used for a specific purpose. If the material you wish to buy is only available in round bar stock, but you need this bar in a hex shape, that is where Able Barmilling’s unique machining process comes in. This can be accomplished without the long lead times and large minimums required by the mills.
While great for finish sized parts, barmilling may often be used to “trim the fat” prior to other machining processes. Able Barmilling will remove the rough material at a cheaper hourly rate than most expensive specialty machines. This will decrease cycle times on such machines, increasing the output without adding additional equipment and saving companies money.
What makes Barmilling great:
- Faster process than mills
- Able Barmilling’s minimum is 1 bar (up to 24 ft. bars are available in standard and metric sizes)
- Common shape tolerance is +/-.005 (+/-.002 possible in some situations)
- Standard surface finish is 125 RMS (up to 32 RMS possible in some situations)
- Industry bar straightness tolerance of +/-.012 inch per foot (Barmilling of some profiles can cause bowing from material stress relieving and may require additional straightening)
- Cut to length requirements and package for shipping
Materials
In our barmiling process we cut many different materials. There are some limitations as to what can be cut as the material must remain strong enough to be pulled and pushed through our process. These limitations will depend mostly on the finished size of the bar.
Example materials used in our process:
- Steel
- Stainless Steel
- Carbon Steel
- Structural Steel
- Tool steel (non-hardened)
- Aluminum
- Brass
- Bronze
- Copper
- Hi-Temperature Alloys
- Plastics
- Titanium
